5. Homebridge -> HomeKit

This article is for advanced users.

Apple HomeKit users can integrate VPNKitten into their home-app. It appears as a switch an can turn VPNKitten On/Off. This is usefull when using an Apple TV. In the integrated Apple Home-screen the VPNKitten On/Off function will appear, so you can switch the VPNKitten via Siri and/or Remote.

You need a Homebridge instance running in your network. More information here: https://homebridge.io

 

1. Install plugin

In your Homebridge instance go to Plugins, and search for homebridge-http-switch

Press Install..

2. Configure plugin

Go to Homebridge Config Editor and edit file, copy text below and past in the “accessories” section.

Use your own VPNKitten gateway ip-address! Press save and restart homebridge.

3. Done

When the Homebridge instance is restarted, the VPN Kitten switch will appear automatically in your home-app.

4. Apple TV settings

Connect your Apple TV to VPN Kitten

If you wish to connect a single or a few devices to VPN Kitten, and not your router and whole network.

1. Check gateway address

Check the VPN Gateway address in the blue bar, here it is 10.0.12.161

2. Set router address on Apple TV

Go to Setting, Network.

Go to Wi-Fi.

Or to Ethernet, if connected wired.

Configure IP..

Choose Manual..

You don’t have to change your IP address.. Press Done.

Leave the subnet to what it is, don’t change.

IMPORTANT

Change Router address to the VPN Kitten address. In this example 10.0.11.161

In your case this address might be different.

And you are done.

You can check your isp with the free speedtest app from ookla.

3. Edit your Router

If you want to connect every device in your network to connect thru VPN, edit your router and set a static IP address on the VPNKITTEN.

In this example a UniFi USG Router is used. Basically, every router could be used if the gateway/router address in the DHCP settings could be edited.

1. Set Static IP adress VPNKITTEN

Press the blue bar.

Then press DHCP at the bottom.

2. Configure the Kitten

Press Edit to go to the IP-adress settings

Set DHCP Configuration to Static.

Don’t save yet!

If your de default gateway is: 10.0.12.1, set the IP address to a free IP in the same subnet. Make sure it is not in use by another device. In this example 10.0.11.254 is set.

Note: Make sure the subnet is right. If it’s not in the same subnet the VPN Kitten is inaccessible !!

Press save

3. Check ip

As you can see the VPN Gateway address is now static 10.0.11.254

Note: your subnet is probably different (192.168.1.X or 192.168.178.X or whatever..)

4. Set Router gateway address

Go to your router network settings.

Set DHCP Gateway address manual to VPNKITTEN, in the example 10.0.11.254

Note: Offcourse set the ip to your VPNKITTEN ipaddress!

2. Getting connected
